The box shelf

Can I borrow a box?

Yes, and it's free. The shelf is the heart of the Mob: hundreds of games, a sign-out book and a few rules about getting them back.

How it works

What happens when I borrow something?

Pick a box, write your name and the date in the sign-out book by the kettle, and take it to a table or home for the week. Count the pieces with the volunteer on the way out, and again with them on the way back. It takes two minutes and saves arguments for years.

Every game is sorted by weight, from green stickers up to red, and by the number of players it seats. Volunteers keep a list of which boxes suit a first night, and the Tuesday teacher will happily suggest a few. If something comes back damaged we mend it, and if something goes missing we look for it together before anyone feels bad.

Members add boxes all the time. Hand a volunteer anything you'd like to share, and it joins the shelf after two plays, a label on the spine and a sticker. You can take it back whenever you like.

Borrowing for the evening is open to anyone through the door. Taking a box home is for members, and it goes home for a week at a time. If you need longer, say so in the book and nobody will mind. If you lose a piece, a volunteer helps you make a stand-in, and the box carries on regardless.

What about the console corner?

A smaller shelf by the big screen holds spare controllers, cables and a few discs, all lent for console afternoons. We don't loan consoles out, but anything else is fair game, and members swap discs in the chat all month.

The corner is tucked behind a curtain on most evenings, and it comes out once a month for a long afternoon of co-op and party fun. Anyone who plays is expected to hand the controller on after one level, so nobody stays stuck on the sofa.
